Shalimar Bandra, Excellent North Indian Cuisine

Shalimar is located opposite Shoppers Stop Bandra, The Great Punjab and Persian Darbar. In the company of such stalwarts, Shalimar holds its own and has done so for many years. The place is popular amongst those craving for North Indian cuisines.

We ordered for a Special Chef Chicken and Chicken Peshawari along with Garlic Naan without bothering to order starters. Earlier in the day we spent time at Sheeshas so didn’t feel the need to order for starters.

We thought the quantity was a bit less but the taste made up for it. The chef special was a delightful mix of chicken and masala gravy without being too pungent. The Peshawari was the usual chicken cooked in fine ginger garlic paste and some black pepper too.

There was only a faint but linger taste of ginger which was good as not many like a lot of ginger in their food.

The garlic Naan was nice as well and it seemed like an overdose of garlic from the naan and from the Peshawari Chicken. The meal uptil now was filling but when 4 hoggers meet, nothing is enough. So to stuff ourselves further, we ordered for a chicken biryani.

The Biryani was pungent but it tasted good. Chicken was succulent and the Biryani quantity was good enough for four especially after the roti-sabzi!

The food was good but we weren’t finished yet! So ordered for desserts including Mango Bowl and Shahi Tukda. I think mom makes excellent Shahi Tukda but the one at Shalimar was good too. Laced with cream, it was delectable though I can only imagine how many calories one must have gained! The mango bowl was freshly cut mango pieces in cream – an excellent combination, which I have tried at home as well already!

The food was excellent but the prices were a bit steep for our liking. The Biryani and the chef special were priced at Rs.170 each while the Peshawari was Rs.145. The shahi Tukda was worth Rs.135, which is expensive as the same can be made at home for far cheaper!

The service here is good too with waiters being attentive (Even with the IPL action going on!) and quick to respond. The ambiance of the place isn’t much really as it is more of a no-frills eating place, an excellent one at that, mind you!

Just Biryani, Just Biryani is good enough here!

Just Biryani is a small restaurant in Oshiwara, Mumbai. The place portrays itself to be a biryani-lovers haunt but it offers a lot more than just biryani. But since it was just biryani we were after, didn’t bother with the starters. Being small, the tables are bit too close to each other but there is enough distance between each table to maintain a certain level of privacy. We went on a weekday so didn’t have to worry about booking a table or waiting in line.

Less crowds and relaxed waiters led to better service and eventually happy customers. We were served with their regular appetizers, a rolled up papad and chutney and onions.

In the meantime we ordered for Prawns Biryani. The good thing about the biryani here is that it is prepared when ordered so the taste is fresh. There are places which Biryani on an assembly line where the taste isn’t exotic anymore and feels like one is eating a regular chicken and rice combination. Thankfully, Just Biryani didn’t put us through that ordeal.

The biryani tasted really good but the quantity of prawns was disappointing. Wished they’d put double the quantity of prawns in the biryani because for Rs.176, it seems way to expensive! The Biryani was accompanied by Aloo Pudina Raita which tasted a bit like the green chutney was more sharp and helped digest the extra spicy biryani.

Anyways, besides the biryani we also ordered for a glass of thick Lassi and Fresh Lime soda. The drinks were standard fare.We finished off with a Misti dohi which was more like Shrikhand with a sharp taste!

Overall, though content with the taste there were a few things we would like them to improve upon. The same was made clear to the management as well through their feedback form.

We only had biryani and a couple of drinks but paid nearly Rs.400 for the meal, which I think, is expensive. I have been here earlier and it is safe to say that Chicken Biryani is a better, cheaper bet as not many can pull off a satisfactory Prawns Biryani.

Jaihind, Jaihind to the Chicken Biryani

Jai Hind is bang opposite my office but yet it took me a good 2 months to finally order something from here. Have eaten here before so was assured that I wouldn’t be disappointed with the quality. The afternoon rush hour meant parcels could take anywhere between 60-120 minutes to travel a distance which is like than 100 metres! So, the wily young fox that I am, I collected the parcel from there.

Ordered for a Chicken Biryani. The Biryani is very much like Hyderabadi Biryani with loads of spicy in it. The gravy is a bit dry which is not such a bad thing. The chicken was cooked in the same gravy and I liked the way the way the taste of gravy and the chicken was assimilated into the gravy. The quantity is excellent as well and for Rs.150 it was worth the 20 minutes wait in the hot sun outside Jai Hind!

Moghul Sarai, Bandra Station

Its been a long long time since Mughlai food passed through my intestines. The urge was a little too much hence decided to go to the best Mughlai place I know – Moghul Sarai.

The place is a bit dark and hence was termed ‘sidey’ by my female friends though we decided to continue our meal at the restaurant itself. First up we ordered for drinks which included lassi for everyone. Apparently it wasn’t just me craving for a heavy lunch!

The lassi was the way I like it – cold and thick! The lassi followed a couple of starters including Afgani kebab and Sheekh Kebab along with Chicken Biryanis. Each dish was amazing. The flavours were well balanced without any particular flavour standing out.

However, the Afgani Kebab was a bit too sweet which was in contract to the Sheekh Kebabs. But the best meal was the Biryani. Again, amazing flavours, the biryani was cooked in a North Indian style. We all agreed that it was the best Biryani we have had in many months!

Moghul Sarai most definitely serves the best Mughlai food in Bandra. Besides awesome food once can also taste the many Arabian hukka flavours here with pricing in the range of INR 100 – INR 500.

The food prices are moderate as well with most dishes in the range of INR 80-200. Though the ambiance isn’t everyone’s cup of tea the food makes up for it! Bon Appetite!

Vibha Restaurant – Nagaon Walanj Paroda

My Trip to Korlai was not just about ancient forts, lighthouses and pristine beaches but also about trying out the food in these areas. Sadly, there wasn’t anything available in Korlai so we went to Nagaon. A little tour of the beautiful Nagaon beach revealed that only Bhurji Pav was available at the many stalls at the beach. We weren’t looking for a snack but a full meal. So asked around a bit and finally arrived at Vibha – a full 30 minutes of searching!

It is amazing how place like Nagaon does not have as many restaurants as one would have liked. Do I smell a business opportunity here?? hehe! Anyways, once we reached Vibha, it become quite clear that there is indeed no other restaurant close to the beach. (Vibha itself would be around 15 minutes from the beach!). Though there are many resorts there, they do not offer lunch or dinner facilities to non-guests, which is quite a letdown!

Anyways, back to Vibha. The place itself looks like a makeshift restaurant, ready to be transported to any part of the town in a jiffy. We got the seat closest to the entrance but that didn’t matter really. The order was placed for two half Chicken Biryanis, one full Prawns Biryani and a Plain Rice and Dal Fry. The order took a long time to arrive as; apparently, we were in line as the tables previously occupied, were to be served first! A lot of people ordered for Biryanis – seems to be a favourite dish to order at Vibha! Until the food arrived, we quenched our thirst with Thumbs Up and Coke. Nearly 30 minutes late, the Biryanis arrived and so did the Plain Rice and Dal Fry.

The Biryanis weren’t as oily as I had expected, which is a good thing mind you! The chicken Biryani was tasted though the Prawns Biryani was delicious! The prawns were huge as well and not like the small ones we had at Murud. We also ordered a Chicken Kolhapuri to go with the Rice. This is where all the oil, which was apparently missing from the rice, was utilised! The chicken was good. wasn’t overcooked but wasn’t tender. Thankfully it wasn’t chewy or rubbery either. The meal was over in no time. The quantity was definitely lesser than what we had at Murud but the quality and the lack of oil made up for it! The total damage came to INR 500 (INR 120 for the Prawns Biryani and INR 50 for the half Chicken Biryani) which is reasonable for a full meal amongst 5 people!

Overall, the food was great though the slow service was a letdown. Pricing was great at well placing Vibha in my ‘must eat at Vibha when at Nagaon’ list :D.

Short and Memorable trip to Korlai Lighthouse and Fort

It’s become a feature of my weekends now. A new place to visit and explore every Sunday and last Sunday was no different! Korlai was always on the agenda and this time my friends and me were eager to check out the lighthouse and the fort. Though the initial plan was to ride all the way to Alibaug, where Korlai is located, we decided to head by boat to save on time (Which we eventually didn’t!). A quick view at the Google Maps made us relatively comfortable that Ferry Warf (Bhaucha Dhakka), from where bikes can be ferried to Alibaug wasn’t so far away from Bandra, but alas we still ended up getting lost! Thankfully some really helpful and extremely sleep uncles (yes in that order) did help us figure out the way to Bhaucha Dhakka and boy were in time or what! Reached there just 5 minutes before the boat left the shores! Phew!

Once on the boat, it was going to take us 1.5 hours to reach Ravas Jetty, where the ferry unloads the bikes and passengers. Ravas is around 10 Kms from Mandwa Dock and around 10 Kms from Alibaug as well.

The nearest beach, I think, is Kihim. The road towards Alibaug isn’t good for bikes at all and is in stark contrast to the road leading to the Mandwa Dock – you know how I know this? Because while coming we took a wrong turn and ended up at Mandwa (this must explain how I would know how many Kms Mandwa is from Ravas!!).

It did not take us long to reach Korlai and we were directed by the locals towards the correct path to the fort and the lighthouse. The path is a bit narrow and only one car can pass at a time. Since we were on bikes it wasn’t a problem for us at all! The path towards the lighthouse is very pretty! The sea and a beach on one side and a hill on another side topped by the Fort make for a pretty heady combination! I can imagine why the Portuguese must have selected this location! When at peace, the men, women and children come out to play on the beach!

Anyways, once at the lighthouse, we were given a tour of the place by the guide there. He told us about the various characteristics of the lighthouse and what makes it different from others. Was quite a short but extremely insightful tour! The tour was succeeded by a visit to the fort.

The fort is situated in a good location and canons, rusted at that, dating back to the 16th century are still there. The fort is not as big as it is long. Infact it is hardly as wide as a 2 lane road and is rectangular in shape. It is a shame the fort hasn’t been renovated like the Shivneri one, but efforts are on to preserve this once might Fort. The visit to the fort was a satisfying one as it was only the 3rd fort visit for me in a year!

The visit left us hungry and dehydrated as we descended to Nagaon to find a restaurant. After nearly 30 minutes of searching we finally found and soon realised that we were lucky to find it in time as it seems to be the only one present in the vicinity with a descent menu! We ordered mainly for rice items including a Chicken Biryani, Prawns Biryani and Dal Fry and plain rice for the lone vegetarian in the group. The food was much better than what we had at Murud!

We then headed back home but missed the last ferry from Ravas to Mumbai which is at 4:30 PM. So we ended up taking a very crowded ferry to Uran and headed back to Mumbai. Reached home at 8:45 PM – extremely tired, exhausted but very very satisfied with the trip! Looking forward to doing another one soon!

Here are the Ferry costs: INR 30 per person/ INR 30 for loading the bikes/ INR 30 for holding the Bikes (not sure what this means but basically just to have the bikes on board after loading them costs INR 30 extra!). The rates are the same while coming to Mumbai though to Uran it’s a bit less since its just 15 minutes from Revas!

Food Costs (Vibha Restaurant): INR 120 for the Prawns Biryani, INR 50 for the Chicken Biryani – cheap rates, good food!

Adi’s – Biryani/Pulav? Decide pls!

I had the urge to have Biryani the other day (I have these biryani urges quite a lot it seems almost every other day!). Anyways, since we were a bit short on time, we went ot Adi’s which is walking distance from my office at Bandra Reclamation. Since I already knew what to eat, I quickly placed the order while my friend scanned the menu to decide on a good cheap offering.  So he just took a chicken breast piece and two romali rotis. He loves the romali rotis here, for INR 10 they are better than rotis at most other places.

I also ordered a lassi (Yes yes I love lassi, hey I am Indian, not some foreign bugger who drinks cola with his food! What is up with that anyways??). The Lassi was good, I liketh! The same cannot be said about the biryani. Don’t get me wrong, the quantity of the chicken and rice was good for 2 people (which I so shameless devoured myself.).

The chicken was tender. The rice was properly steamed and oh it had jeera in it as well. It was basically, Jeera rice, boneless chicken and a questionable chicken biryani gravy. Questionable because, it didn’t taste anything, was tasteless in one respect though it was quite and I mean quite theeka! It wasn’t spicy which was the sad part of it. Though I am sure the cook put quite a few spices in there, I think he just put too much of red chilly powder!! And oh the biryani lacked the condiments you get in a Chicken Biryani. I did finish the meal though (Yes, by now u know what a big hogger I  am!) I was quite disappointed in the taste department and to top it up, the dish did not satiate my appetite for a chicken biryani as I didn’t have biryani. I think I had – Chicken Jeera Pulav! hey Adi’s just invented a new dish! And I named it!

Haa, anyways, I am still craving for a biryani, but then I have so much home cooked food right now that I am sure I won’t be eating Biryani anytime soon! But then I think I may just slip in a proper Biryani somewhere between lunch and dinner!
